NHL Trade Talks Heat Up: Carter Hart Selects Final Team Options, Oilers Eyeing Yegor Chinakhov

NHL Goaltender Carter Hart’s Trade Prospects

As NHL teams prepare for the upcoming season, goaltender Carter Hart has emerged as a prime candidate for those seeking to bolster their netminding options. At 27, Hart has faced considerable challenges but has recently been cleared of serious allegations, a significant factor in his trade market value. He was one of five players associated with Canada’s junior squad from 2018 who were acquitted of sexual assault allegations this past July. Although these players can finalize contracts with NHL teams by mid-October, they will be unable to take the ice until their suspensions expire on December 1.

Potential Teams Interested in Hart

The Philadelphia Flyers, who previously employed Hart from 2018 until 2024, have reportedly considered reacquiring the goalie. However, general manager Daniel Briere mentioned that Hart’s representation believes pursuing opportunities elsewhere would be more beneficial for his future.

In addition, the Edmonton Oilers were speculated to be in the running for Hart’s services, yet GM Stan Bowman dismissed that potential landing spot. The Pittsburgh Penguins have also dismissed any interest, as GM Kyle Dubas responded lightly to the connection with Hart.

Hart’s Frontrunners

Recent reports by Chris Johnston of The Athletic reveal that Hart has narrowed his options down to several teams likely to offer him significant playing time. Among the frontrunners are the Carolina Hurricanes and the Vegas Golden Knights, both of whom have demonstrated playoff prowess in recent seasons. The Golden Knights have made the playoffs seven out of the last eight seasons, while the Hurricanes reached the Eastern Conference finals twice in the last three years.

Although initially considered a possible contender for Hart’s services, the Utah Mammoth have since exited the race, according to Johnston.

Yegor Chinakhov’s Trade Situation

In a separate matter concerning the Oilers, there have been whispers connecting them to Yegor Chinakhov of the Columbus Blue Jackets. Chinakhov, 24, stirred interest this past July when he expressed a desire to be traded, citing miscommunication with Blue Jackets coach Dean Evason. Despite still being present in training camp, Chinakhov has not retracted his trade request.

He is in the final year of his contract, which carries a cap hit of $2.1 million. However, the Oilers’ constraints on salary cap space and Chinakhov’s previous injury problems make a trade to Edmonton unlikely. Interestingly, The Hockey NewsJason Newland has reported that Chinakhov may be reconsidering his stance on staying with the Blue Jackets, as he recently indicated, following a productive meeting with Evason, that both are now on better terms.
