The Montreal Canadiens’ Trade Strategy
The Montreal Canadiens are actively seeking a second-line center, reflecting a need for enhanced offensive depth. Recent speculation indicates that they might leverage their depth on defense as a potential asset in trade discussions. Last year, this strategy proved fruitful when they acquired Patrik Laine from the Columbus Blue Jackets, sending defenseman Jordan Harris in exchange. Similarly, in July, Logan Mailloux was traded to the St. Louis Blues, bringing in right winger Zack Bolduc.
Potential Trade Targets
According to a recent report by Marco D’Amico of RG. Org, the Canadiens are open to utilizing their defensive players as trade bait should an elite top-six forward become available.
One player drawing significant interest from teams in the Western Conference has been Kaiden Guhle. Currently healing from surgery for a torn adductor muscle, Guhle is expected to make his return by early January. Despite his injury concerns, D’Amico emphasized that the Canadiens are not looking to trade the 23-year-old defenseman, valuing his skills and potential as he begins a five-year contract worth an average of $5.5 million.
Should the Canadiens decide to exchange a defenseman in their quest for a forward, names like Arber Xhekaj, Jayden Struble, or Adam Engstrom could emerge as candidates given the organization’s growing depth on the blueline. Alexandre Carrier might also be considered, particularly if standout David Reinbacher is prepared to step into the NHL lineup soon.
Other Canadian Teams in the Trade Market
While Montreal is exploring trade avenues, they aren’t solitary in their pursuit as other Canadian teams are also eyeing potential deals this season. The Ottawa Senators, for example, have been active in trade discussions since November. According to a report by Julian McKenzie from The Athletic, General Manager Steve Staios is in the market for both a defenseman and a forward, although he’s indicated a preference not to pursue high-profile targets. Contrary to speculation, TSN’s Darren Dreger confirmed that top prospect Carter Yakemchuk will not be moved.
In a related issue, the Senators recently attempted to trade left winger Alex Formenton ahead of the December 1 signing deadline for restricted free agents but found no takers. Consequently, Formenton is now unable to participate in NHL play this season.
Looking Ahead
As both teams navigate the trade waters, the options available before the March 6 trade deadline seem limited, highlighting the potential for further moves in the coming weeks.
