Support for Brad Larsen
Brad Larsen, the former head coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets, is receiving widespread support from the NHL community as he mourns the loss of his wife, Hannah. Hannah succumbed to a prolonged fight against cancer, a struggle that Brad knows all too well, having faced his own battles with the disease, with her being a steadfast companion throughout that journey.
Community Response
The tragic news of Hannah’s passing was made public by ex-Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella during an ESPN segment on March 12, where he extended heartfelt condolences to Brad and his family.
In a gesture of solidarity, the Blue Jackets organization expressed their sorrow in a statement posted on social media on March 13, offering their heartfelt condolences and support to the Larsen family.
Coaching Career and Challenges
Throughout his coaching career with the Blue Jackets spanning nearly a decade, Larsen had significant roles, including time as both an assistant and head coach with the team’s AHL affiliate in Springfield, Massachusetts, before moving to the NHL level. He was ultimately promoted to head coach following Tortorella’s departure under mutual agreement.
Larsen faced significant challenges during his coaching tenure, particularly two tough seasons filled with injuries, which culminated in his dismissal following the 2022-23 season. After leaving the Blue Jackets, he opted to spend a year focused on family, even coaching his son Ty’s youth sports team.
Return to the NHL
In June 2024, he took a step back into the NHL with the Calgary Flames; however, he had to take an indefinite leave of absence shortly after due to Hannah’s declining health. Following her death, condolences flooded in from the hockey community, including from Pascal Vincent, who praised Hannah and offered love and support to Brad and their children.
“My heart is broken for Brad, their two children, and all of Hannah’s family. Sending them all my love and deepest condolences.” – Pascal Vincent
Conclusion
The outpouring of compassion from players, coaches, and fans alike showcases the tight-knit nature of the hockey community, as they rally around one of their own during a time of profound loss.
