Newcastle United’s Striker Situation
As speculation surrounds the future of Newcastle United’s star striker Alexander Isak, the club is reportedly eyeing a potential acquisition of RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko. The Tyneside outfit has maintained a keen interest in Sesko, positioning him as a primary target should Isak decide to secure a transfer. However, any potential agreement might pose substantial financial challenges for Newcastle.
Isak’s Uncertain Future
Recent reports have emerged that Isak, who was the top goal scorer for Newcastle last season, is hesitant to join the side on their upcoming pre-season tour due to strong interest from Liverpool. Despite Newcastle’s intentions to retain him, Liverpool’s pursuit has raised concerns about his future at St James’ Park.
Benjamin Sesko’s Availability
Sesko, 22, has been on the radar of several clubs and was notably monitored by Arsenal, who were in search of a forward. However, Arsenal shifted their focus to Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres, nearing a deal valued at approximately €63.5 million (£54.8 million; $74.2 million), thereby leaving Sesko available for consideration.
Contract and Release Clause
Earlier this summer, Sesko extended his association with RB Leipzig, signing a new contract that binds him to the club until 2029. This deal, negotiated in June 2024, includes a release clause near €65 million (£55.3 million; $70.8 million). Additionally, it is rumored that a gentleman’s agreement may exist between Sesko and Leipzig, allowing him to leave for a project that aligns better with his career ambitions.
Sesko’s Performance and Skills
During the 2024-25 season, Sesko showcased his striking abilities, netting 21 goals in 45 matches across competitions. His skillset extends beyond merely scoring; he possesses an eagerness to engage with the ball and occasionally takes calculated risks in his passing, albeit with some inconsistencies. Standing at 6 feet 5 inches, he excels in aerial situations and displays remarkable close control, enabling him to maneuver past defenders effortlessly.
His shooting capabilities are without question, utilizing both feet effectively and also being proficient with headers. Sesko’s talent shines even brighter when complemented by a dynamic attacking partner, as evidenced by his successful collaborations with Lois Openda at Leipzig and Junior Adamu during their time at Red Bull Salzburg. Any club acquiring him would undoubtedly enhance their offensive capabilities.
