Newcastle Targets Brentford’s Yoane Wissa Amid Shift Away from Hugo Ekitike Pursuit

Newcastle United’s Transfer Focus Shifts

In a notable shift of focus, Newcastle United is reportedly considering a transfer for Yoane Wissa, the Brentford striker, as they step back from their pursuit of Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt. Although the club has yet to initiate contact with Brentford regarding Wissa’s availability, it is anticipated that discussions will take place shortly. A key component for the deal to progress will involve negotiations on personal terms with the DR Congo forward.

Previous Interest and Performance

Previously, Nottingham Forest made an attempt to secure Wissa’s services, but their offer was turned down. Last season, Wissa stood out in the Premier League as the leading non-penalty goalscorer, netting 19 goals across 35 appearances. His contract with Brentford runs until June 2026, with an option for an additional year.

Change in Newcastle’s Strategy

Initially, Newcastle prioritized Ekitike, but their ambitious €80 million (£69.3 million; $92.8 million) bid was rejected, and they are no longer actively pursuing that option. Reports also emerged that Liverpool has reached out to Frankfurt concerning Ekitike’s potential transfer.

Brentford’s Transition

The fate of Wissa and Brentford’s willingness to entertain offers for him may also be influenced by the ongoing interest in his teammate Bryan Mbeumo, who is attracting Manchester United‘s attention. If Wissa were to depart, it would add to the significant transformations taking place at Brentford this summer.

After originally bringing Wissa to England from Lorient in August 2021, former Brentford manager Thomas Frank has since moved to Tottenham Hotspur, taking three coaching staff members with him. Moreover, Brentford’s captain Christian Norgaard has signed with Arsenal, while Keith Andrews, who was previously the club’s set-piece coach, has succeeded Frank as head coach. This shake-up marks a significant period of transition for the west London club.
