New York Jets Appoint Frank Reich as Offensive Coordinator

In a significant move to bolster their offensive strategy, the New York Jets announced on Wednesday that they have appointed Frank Reich as their new offensive coordinator. Reich, who has previously held the position of head coach both in the NFL and at Stanford University, steps in for Tanner Engstrand, who parted ways with the Jets after just one season leading the offense.

Experience and Leadership

At 64 years old, Reich brings a wealth of experience to the Jets, offering head coach Aaron Glenn a seasoned play caller to guide the team’s attack. His hiring follows the club’s recent decision to elevate Brian Duker to the position of defensive coordinator, filling the gap left by Steve Wilks, who was dismissed just three weeks prior to the end of the last season.

Search for Offensive Leader

The Jets’ search for a new offensive leader included interviews with notable candidates such as Darrell Bevell and Greg Roman. Earlier this week, the Jets conducted in-person discussions with Reich, solidifying his selection after engaging in virtual meetings with him and others like Ronald Curry and Lunda Wells.

Coaching Background

Before joining the Jets, Reich served as the interim head coach at Stanford where he recorded a 4-8 record last season and was acting as a senior adviser for the program until the appointment of Tavita Pritchard as the new head coach in November. His extensive coaching career also includes stints as head coach of the Indianapolis Colts and Carolina Panthers.

Notably, Reich’s NFL career began as a quarterback, during which he played for 14 seasons, including a year when he was teammates with Glenn on the Jets in 1996.
