Islanders Announce Relocation of AHL Affiliate
The New York Islanders have announced intentions to relocate their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate from its current home in Bridgeport, Connecticut, to Hamilton, Ontario, starting next season. This decision, revealed on Thursday, awaits approval from the AHL’s Board of Governors before it can be finalized.
Details of the Move
If sanctioned, the rebranded team, which has long been known as the Bridgeport Islanders, will take to the ice at the TD Coliseum in Hamilton—an arena that underwent significant renovations last fall. Details regarding a new name, logo, and ticket sales for the local market are forthcoming and will be announced once the AHL gives its blessing.
Management’s Perspective
Mathieu Darche, the Islanders’ general manager and executive vice president, expressed enthusiasm about the prospective move, stating, “We are excited to make Hamilton our primary affiliate in the American Hockey League. The support the city has shown our organization throughout this transition has been incredible. We look forward to having our top young talent play in front of such a strong fanbase inside the newly renovated, world-class TD Coliseum and we are committed to establishing ourselves in the community to engage a new generation of hockey fans.”
Significance of the Shift
The Islanders’ minor league team has operated out of Bridgeport for a quarter-century, making this a significant shift for both the franchise and the local hockey landscape.
