Islanders Set to Face Hurricanes in Season Finale
In a bid to regain some pride, the New York Islanders are set to face the Carolina Hurricanes in their season-ending match on Tuesday, following their elimination from playoff contention this past Sunday. Coach Pete DeBoer acknowledged the situation when asked about his approach for the upcoming game, stating:
“I need to consult with Mathieu [Darche] to formulate our strategy. I aim to give as many players as possible a chance to shine. For instance, we substituted Palat for Duclair to evaluate his performance, since I haven’t seen him play yet. It’s crucial to assess younger players in game scenarios for future reference.”
Bridgeport Islanders Secure Playoff Position
The Bridgeport Islanders, the AHL affiliate, secured their playoff position on the same day and their next match isn’t until April 15, allowing the NHL team’s farewell game to take place without conflicting with Bridgeport’s playoff run. This opens the door for some new talent to emerge in the Islanders’ lineup on Tuesday night.
Notable Players Making an Impact
One notable player expected to make his NHL debut is forward Victor Eklund, the 16th overall pick from 2026, who has been impressive since arriving from the SHL. The 19-year-old has tallied nine points in just seven games at the AHL level, with two goals and seven assists.
Adding to the potential lineup are several players who have shown significant prowess this season, including:
- Adam Beckman – 28 goals and 21 assists
- Matt Luff – 18 goals and 33 assists
- Liam Foudy – 25 goals and 21 assists
- Matthew Maggio – 32 points (11 goals, 21 assists) in 60 games
Defensive Strategies and Goaltending
On defense, DeBoer might look to Long Island’s own Marshall Warren, who previously played eight games for the Islanders under coach Patrick Roy, to utilize his agility on the ice. Isaiah George has also seen action as a seventh defenseman since March 24, participating in a game against the Hurricanes.
A pivotal factor for Bridgeport’s playoff advancement has been goaltender Henrik Tikkanen, who boasts a record of 17-8-1, a 2.60 GAA, .899 SV%, and one shutout. There’s speculation that Tikkanen, a seventh-round draft pick from 2020, could see some action against NHL-level shots, especially with backup David Rittich potentially entering free agency and the uncertain future of Semyon Varlamov, who has undergone two knee surgeries.
Roster and Salary Cap Considerations
It’s important to note that although there isn’t a cap on the number of players on a roster at this stage, compliance with salary cap regulations is required. The Islanders currently have $2.682 million in cap space available, with options to increase that figure if players are placed on long-term injured reserve.
The puck is scheduled to drop at 7 PM ET for the Islanders’ finale against Carolina.
