New York Islanders Bring Back Marc Gatcomb from AHL Following Palmieri’s Injury

New York Islanders Recall Marc Gatcomb

In a significant move prompted by a season-ending knee injury to Kyle Palmieri, the New York Islanders have decided to bring back forward Marc Gatcomb from their American Hockey League affiliate, the Bridgeport Islanders. The announcement made on November 30, 2025, ensures the team fills a gap created by Palmieri’s absence due to an ACL tear, which has left a mark on the Islanders’ offensive roster.

Gatcomb’s Performance and Recent Challenges

Gatcomb, who is 26, showcased his potential during the previous season by appearing in 39 games for the Islanders. His performance highlighted a mix of physicality, defensive responsibility, and offensive capability, notably scoring eight goals and notching one assist during his 25-game stretch. This season, however, he found himself limited to just one game — a disappointing 5-2 defeat against the Washington Capitals in the Islanders’ home opener.

After being waived on October 22 due to the financial implications of his $900,000 salary cap hit, the Islanders aimed to strategically maneuver within the salary cap constraints. Prior to placing Pierre Engvall on long-term injured reserve (LTIR) due to a season-ending ankle surgery, the Islanders sought to maximize their cap space. Waiving Gatcomb, alongside the recall of Matthew Highmore ($775K) and Marshall Warren ($825K), allowed the team to approach the salary cap ceiling closely, offering them flexibility.

Current Salary Cap Situation

As it stands, by recalling Gatcomb, the Islanders will be exceeding the salary cap limit by $855,497, compelling them to use a portion of Engvall’s LTIR funds. During his recent stint with Bridgeport, Gatcomb demonstrated his skills by accumulating eight points in 15 games, with four goals and four assists.

Upcoming Challenges

With the Islanders set to face off against the Capitals again on Sunday, it remains uncertain if Gatcomb will be included in the lineup, a crucial decision given recent roster challenges.
