New Orleans Pelicans Owner Gayle Benson Asserts Team is Not for Sale Amid Relocation Speculation

Pelicans Owner Dismisses Sale Rumors

As rumors circulate regarding the potential relocation of the New Orleans Pelicans, owner Gayle Benson has firmly dismissed claims that the franchise is up for sale. In an interview with Jeff Duncan from the Times-Picayune, Benson emphasized,

“Let me be clear about this: The teams are not for sale.”

She expressed frustration at the ongoing speculation and reiterated her commitment to the franchise. At 79, she stated,

“I’m pretty healthy,”

dismissing overtures from those looking to acquire the team as a waste of her time.

Future of the Pelicans Amid Poor Performance

Benson did, however, address the future of the Pelicans in light of their poor performance, with the team currently struggling at a 2-9 record this season.

“I have confidence in Joe Dumars, who I appointed as the head of basketball operations last summer. He is evaluating the entire basketball operation, including Coach Willie Green, and he will ultimately decide on next steps,”

she explained. Dumars is a well-respected figure in the NBA and has a long-standing relationship with Green, which Benson believes plays a crucial role in decision-making regarding the franchise’s leadership.

Community Focus Over Sales

Despite the Pelicans’ disappointing history—having made it to the playoffs only twice in the last eight years and recently suffering from a negative reputation among players—Benson remains focused on the community rather than potential sales. She stated,

“When I pass, both teams can be sold, and the money will go directly to enhancing our community.”

Challenges Ahead for the Franchise

Former Pelican Kendrick Perkins, now an ESPN analyst, highlighted challenges for the franchise, stating that New Orleans remains overshadowed by the more prominent NFL team, the Saints. He noted that facilities for the Pelicans lack the high standard found in other NBA teams, complicating the appeal for prospective players.

Although Benson faces pressure to improve the Pelicans’ standing, her public assurances indicate that the team will remain in New Orleans for the foreseeable future. Fans of the Pelicans will undoubtedly look to Dumars for potential solutions to revitalize the team’s performance and reputation.
