New Madrid Signing Dean Huijsen Aims to Follow in Sergio Ramos’ Footsteps

Dean Huijsen Aims to Emulate Sergio Ramos at Real Madrid

Dean Huijsen, the latest addition to Real Madrid’s roster, has expressed a desire to emulate club icon Sergio Ramos, whom he affectionately refers to as his idol. The young center-back, who recently penned a five-year deal with Madrid, spoke candidly about his aspirations in a conversation with Diario AS following a training session with the Spanish national team, which is preparing for a UEFA Nations League semifinal match against France this Thursday.

Huijsen’s Career Trajectory

At just 20 years old, Huijsen has experienced a remarkable trajectory over the past year, transitioning from his early career in Málaga to playing for Bournemouth in the English Premier League, where he impressed enough to earn his first appearance for Spain in March. The Amsterdam-born defender believes that Ramos, who spent 16 illustrious years at Madrid winning numerous titles and earning three major international trophies with Spain, stands as a model for him.

“I strive to be like Sergio Ramos,” Huijsen remarked. “He has everything; his qualities as a leader, his ability to score goals, and his strong character are qualities I truly admire.”

Before making his way to Bournemouth last July, Huijsen had a stint at Juventus, which also included a loan period at Roma. Originally intending to develop his skills at Bournemouth for two years, he found the pace of his career’s evolution to be overwhelming.

“Things have progressed much faster than I anticipated,” he admitted.

Real Madrid’s Defensive Overhaul

Real Madrid is currently undergoing a significant defensive overhaul after a lackluster season, highlighted by the departure of coach Carlo Ancelotti, who is now at the helm of the Brazilian national team. Huijsen has already engaged in discussions with new coach Xabi Alonso regarding his role and the club’s objectives, which include reclaiming glory in upcoming competitions such as the Club World Cup later this month.

“Our discussions have revolved around his vision for the team and the future,” Huijsen shared. “Naturally, our aim is to win titles again, and I believe we will achieve that.”

Excited to Compete Alongside Stars

Joining a team rich with talent that struggled to bond last season, Huijsen is excited about the prospect of playing alongside stars like Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior, Rodrygo, and Jude Bellingham. Madrid’s journey in the Club World Cup begins on June 18 against Al Hilal in Miami, followed by matches against Pachuca on June 22 and Salzburg on June 26.

“I want to compete alongside the best,” Huijsen stated, as he takes his first steps into a prestigious career at one of the world’s most renowned clubs.
