Islanders’ Challenging Season Opener
The New York Islanders faced a challenging start to their 2025-26 season with a closely contested 4-3 defeat against the Pittsburgh Penguins at PPG Paints Arena. Drouin, who inked a lucrative two-year deal worth $4 million per season earlier this summer, showcased his potential by scoring in his debut with the Islanders. He logged nearly 20 minutes of ice time, contributing three shots before receiving a major penalty and misconduct late in the match, prompting a hearing. His chemistry with fellow newcomer Bo Horvat will likely be a focal point for the team moving forward.
Another debutant, Maxim Shabanov, also made his presence felt by scoring a dramatic goal to level the game at 2-2 late in the second period. His one-timer from his knees came as a result of an impressive assist from Simon Holmström, marking a memorable introduction to the NHL. Although Shabanov’s training camp performance had been subdued, he demonstrated his scoring potential when it mattered most.
In addition, Emil Heineman, another addition from Montreal, played a solid game, contributing in various facets with hits and drawings. Each of these newcomers ended the game with a plus-one rating, aligning with the team’s hopes of building a cohesive unit as the season progresses.
