New Developments for Malik Beasley in Gambling Investigation; Knicks Eye Potential Signing

by August 22, 2025

Malik Beasley No Longer Under Investigation

According to recent reports, Malik Beasley is no longer considered a subject in the federal investigation related to gambling, which had previously complicated his potential move to a new NBA team this summer. Sources, including SNY’s NBA Insider Ian Begley, indicate that the New York Knicks are examining Beasley’s situation closely, particularly regarding the possibility of him facing a suspension during the upcoming 2025-26 season.

Legal Situation and Team Interest

Beasley, a seasoned guard with nine years of experience in the league, has been in talks with legal representatives who have confirmed their client is not a target of the investigation concerning gambling activities related to NBA games and betting prop bets for the 2023-24 season. Throughout this probe, Beasley has avoided any charges.

This summer, the Knicks have already added Jordan Clarkson, a veteran guard, to their roster to enhance their bench depth, which had underperformed under previous coach Tom Thibodeau. While New York can only extend a veteran’s minimum offer to Beasley—who is 28 years old—it faces competition from other teams likely to present more lucrative contracts.

Previous Contract Talks and Performance

Before news of the investigation emerged, the Detroit Pistons were reportedly preparing to re-sign Beasley with a three-year deal worth $42 million, following his time with them last season. However, after the NBA notified its teams about the investigation just prior to the onset of free agency, Detroit shifted its focus to different players.

Last season, Beasley played 82 games for the Pistons, starting 18 of them. He posted averages of 16.3 points, shooting 43% overall and 41.6% from beyond the arc, in addition to contributing 2.6 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game in approximately 28 minutes of play. In six playoff games against the Knicks, he averaged 14 points, although he struggled with his shooting percentages, managed to finish as the runner-up for the NBA Sixth Man of the Year award, trailing only Boston’s Payton Pritchard.

Career Overview

Since entering the NBA as the 19th overall pick in 2016, Beasley has had a varied career, playing for teams including the Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves, Utah Jazz, Los Angeles Lakers, Milwaukee Bucks, and the aforementioned Pistons. With the new developments in his legal situation, Beasley’s future in the NBA seems to hold new potential as the free agency period unfolds.
