Netflix to Stream Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford Fight
Netflix is set to deliver a highly-anticipated boxing event this September, with the live streaming of the fight between boxing stars Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford. Scheduled to take place in Las Vegas on September 13, this bout is generating significant buzz within the boxing community.
Promotional Partnership and Excitement
This monumental clash forms part of a promotional partnership involving the Riyadh Season, a Saudi Arabian event that signed Alvarez to a multi-fight contract earlier this year, and Dana White’s recently established TKO Boxing, which launched just a few months ago in March.
The collaboration has been much speculated upon, leading to this groundbreaking announcement. White expressed his excitement, stating:
“Turki desires to deliver the biggest fights that fans crave, and this opportunity aligns perfectly with that vision. The fact that my inaugural boxing promotion features Canelo vs. Crawford is truly incredible; it’s a once-in-a-lifetime event.”
Fighter Profiles
Canelo Alvarez, boasting a record of 63 victories, 2 defeats, and 2 draws, successfully defended his undisputed super-middleweight title last month in Riyadh with a unanimous decision win against William Scull. At 34, Alvarez has held the undisputed champion title since his TKO win over Caleb Plant in 2021 and remains unbeaten in the super-middleweight category.
His only defeat since a notable loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2013 came at the hands of Dmitry Bivol in a light heavyweight clash last year.
Terence Crawford, 37 years old and undefeated with 41 wins, including an impressive 28 by knockout, recently clinched the WBA and WBO light middleweight titles following a victory over Israil Madrimov in August. His fight against Alvarez will see Crawford stepping up to the 154-pound super middleweight category, marking only his second attempt at this weight class.
Notably, he is the first male boxer to achieve the distinction of being an undisputed champion in multiple weight divisions, including light welterweight and welterweight.
Significance and Previous Broadcasts
This eagerly awaited event is significant as it falls just before Mexico’s Independence Day, a holiday on which Alvarez has fought multiple times throughout his career.
This fight will not be Netflix’s first foray into boxing broadcast, following the streaming of the widely discussed Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson bout, which drew in approximately 74 million viewers, though it faced technical difficulties.
Netflix will also enhance its streaming capabilities with its scheduled July airing of the trilogy fight between boxing legends Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano, marking the first all-women’s boxing card at Madison Square Garden.
Expanding Sports Broadcasting
In addition to boxing, Netflix has ventured into sports broadcasting with its successful streaming of NFL games last Christmas and plans to continue this trend, presenting more holiday matches in 2025 after overcoming minor technical issues during pregame coverage while achieving substantial viewer numbers during the events, including a record-breaking halftime show with Beyonce.
