NBA Weighs Expansion Possibilities, Eyeing Teams in Las Vegas and Seattle

NBA Expansion Plans

The National Basketball Association is considering a significant move towards expansion with discussions planned for potential new teams in Las Vegas and Seattle. According to reports from Shams Charania of ESPN, the league’s Board of Governors is scheduled to convene from March 24-25 to cast their votes on this proposal, which could pave the way for NBA franchises in these two cities by the 2028-29 season.

Process and Implications

If the Board approves this exploration of expansion, it would not automatically mean that both cities will secure teams. However, it will initiate a process where the league can seek out potential buyers and additional bidders for the franchises. Such a move would mark a return for the NBA to Seattle, where the former SuperSonics relocated to Oklahoma City following the 2007-08 season.

Meanwhile, this expansion would also mean the introduction of a brand new professional basketball team to Las Vegas, which has increasingly become a hub for major sports franchises, including the NHL’s Golden Knights and NFL’s Raiders.

Voting Requirements

To move forward with the expansion plans, a minimum of 23 out of 30 team governors must support the venture during their vote. If the initial decision passes in March, a subsequent vote to finalize the decision is expected later this year.

Strategic Considerations

The NBA’s potential expansion reflects the league’s strategy to capitalize on the growing popularity of basketball and the established sports culture in both cities, with Las Vegas particularly noted for its capacity to host and support various sporting events.
