NBA Playoff Picture Update
As the 2025-26 NBA regular season approaches its conclusion with just over five weeks remaining, the competition in the standings is intensifying, especially among teams vying for playoff positions. The Oklahoma City Thunder and Detroit Pistons have solidified their places at the top of their respective conferences, yet the battle for playoff spots below them has become increasingly exciting.
Recently, the Minnesota Timberwolves have made a significant leap, overtaking the Denver Nuggets to land in the top tier of the Western Conference and are now eyeing the Houston Rockets for the no. 3 seed. Along with the Los Angeles Lakers, four teams are competing fiercely in the West for the advantage of playing at home during the initial playoff rounds.
In the Eastern Conference, the top four teams appear more settled with the Boston Celtics, New York Knicks, and Cleveland Cavaliers expected to join the Pistons in the playoffs. However, the final rankings in terms of seeding could considerably impact matchups and strategies in the subsequent rounds of the playoffs.
Meanwhile, the seeding for the play-in tournament is evolving, although the current standings indicate a lull in excitement for both conferences regarding the teams contending for these positions due to a number of teams opting to tank.

How the Play-In Tournament Works
The format involves two rounds for each conference:
- Round 1:
- Game 1: No. 7 seed vs. No. 8 seed
- Game 2: No. 9 seed vs. No. 10 seed
The No. 7 and No. 9 seeds host these games. The winner of the first game secures the No. 7 playoff spot, while the loser moves to Round 2 against the winner of Game 2. The loser of Game 2 is eliminated.
- Round 2:
The loser of Game 1 faces the winner of Game 2, with the victor claiming the No. 8 spot in the playoffs, leaving the losing team out of contention.
