NBA Expands Illegal Gambling Investigation, Requests Records from Lakers and Associates of LeBron James

Overview of the Investigation

The recent detention of Damon Jones has triggered a closer look at the Los Angeles Lakers and LeBron James’ network. The National Basketball Association (NBA) is actively seeking records and mobile devices from personnel across various teams, including members of the Lakers organization associated with James, in connection with an ongoing inquiry into illegal gambling activities as reported by The Athletic.

Context of the Scrutiny

This scrutiny follows a series of arrests that included high-profile figures such as Chauncey Billups, the head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers, Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, and Jones, who previously served as an assistant coach with the Cleveland Cavaliers. The inquiry is being led by Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, a distinguished law firm, after Congress expressed its concern over the implications of these arrests.

NBA’s Response

According to a statement from an NBA representative to The Athletic, the league has engaged an independent legal firm to probe the allegations pertaining to the indictment.

“In line with standard investigative procedures, several individuals and organizations have been asked to retain relevant documents and communications. Cooperation has been forthcoming from all involved parties,”

the statement read.

Details of the Allegations

The Lakers are now under the spotlight largely because of Jones’ arrest, which prosecutors allege was linked to a manipulated poker network as well as insider gambling activities. Notably, he’s accused of having passed on confidential information regarding an injury to James prior to a game in 2023, potentially breaching league rules, even though James was not listed on the injury report at that time.

Jones’ Relationship with James

Jones has a long-standing relationship with James; the two played together for three seasons at the Cavaliers, where Jones eventually transitioned into a coaching role and later served as an informal assistant during the Lakers’ 2022-23 campaign. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.

Implications for the Lakers

To date, the NBA has extended its requests for documentation from at least ten employees of the Lakers. Among those implicated are two close associates of James: assistant trainer Mike Mancias and executive administrator Randy Mims, both of whom have complied with the NBA’s inquiry. Mancias has been James’ personal trainer for roughly two decades, while Mims has known the superstar since childhood. Importantly, neither James, Mancias, nor Mims has faced any charges or been named in the legal proceedings as of yet.

Ongoing Investigation

However, the investigation does mention an instance where Jones purportedly referenced the injury status of a player, referred to as “Player 3” and “Player 4,” raising questions about the ongoing probe and the NBA’s concerns.
