NBA Expands Collaboration with Abu Dhabi, Plans Global Basketball Academy and More Games

NBA Expands Presence in the Middle East

In a significant move to enhance basketball’s presence in the Middle East, the NBA has reaffirmed its partnership with the Department of Culture and Tourism (DCT) in Abu Dhabi. Announced on Thursday, this extension will not only ensure that the league continues to host preseason games in the region but also marks the initiation of discussions for a new global academy based in the UAE’s capital. This academy aims to serve aspiring male basketball players from around the world, further establishing Abu Dhabi as a central hub for basketball development.

Financial Aspects and Future Plans

While the financial specifics of the agreement remain under wraps, estimates suggest that the nine-year extension could exceed $300 million. This figure aligns with previous financial commitments made by the DCT, including a notable deal last year where €25 million (approximately $29.2 million) was paid to host the EuroLeague Final Four.

Additionally, the NBA’s ongoing collaboration with the DCT coincides with its plans to introduce a new basketball league in Europe, potentially launching in the upcoming year. Notably, DCT’s connections with Manchester City are vital, as the football club has reportedly engaged with the NBA concerning participation in this future basketball league. Furthermore, Manchester City is an investor in the Co-Op Live Arena, which will host a regular-season NBA game scheduled for 2027.

Statements from DCT Leadership

Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi, highlighted that this partnership solidifies Abu Dhabi’s role as a burgeoning basketball destination in the Middle East while fostering economic diversity and youth engagement.

He is the brother of Khaldoon Al Mubarak, who leads Manchester City and plays a significant role in Mubadala, a prominent investment fund in Abu Dhabi.

Ongoing Engagement and Future Events

The NBA’s engagement with Abu Dhabi has been continuous, featuring preseason matches in every season since 2022. Teams like Milwaukee, Atlanta, Dallas, and Minnesota have participated, with scheduled games involving Boston, Denver, New York, and Philadelphia in 2025. This year also saw USA Basketball host games in Abu Dhabi, prior to significant international competitions, suggesting that the trend of U.S. basketball teams visiting the UAE will persist, especially with the next World Cup set for Qatar in 2027.

Growth of Basketball in the UAE

For almost four decades, NBA games have been broadcast in the United Arab Emirates, showcasing a growth in basketball participation of 60% and an expanded fanbase of over 25%, based on research by YouGov since the initiation of annual preseason visitations in 2022. Mark Tatum, the NBA’s Deputy Commissioner, acknowledged the productive partnership with DCT Abu Dhabi, noting its critical role in nurturing basketball enthusiasm across the UAE and the Middle East.

Future NBA Global Academy

The future NBA Global Academy in Abu Dhabi is intended to be an elite center for training and education, aimed at high-school-age athletes from the UAE, surrounding regions, and beyond. Notably, the academy will also include basketball development programs tailored for local girls, promoting broader participation in the sport.
