Nathan Miller Claims Thrilling Victory at Los Angeles Marathon; Priscah Cherono Tops Women’s Race

Los Angeles Marathon 2023: A Thrilling Conclusion

In an exhilarating conclusion to the 41st Los Angeles Marathon, Nathan Miller clinched victory on Sunday by narrowly outsprinting his Kenyan competitor in what has been described as the tightest finish in the event’s history. Completing the 26.2-mile race in 2 hours, 11 minutes, and 18 seconds, the Jackson, Michigan resident secured his place as the second consecutive American male victor after last year’s success by Matt Richtman.

Race Highlights

Miller’s remarkable finish came despite him starting the race without the lead. His closest rival, Michael Kamau from Kenya, also clocked in at the same time but was unable to secure a win after suffering an unfortunate fall across the finish line. Kamau, who did not consume any fluids throughout the marathon, required assistance from medical personnel and was transported on a stretcher after the race.

At 36, Miller balances his athletic pursuits with a career as a substitute teacher and a high school track and cross country coach at Jackson High School. His personal best time is notably 2:10:45, achieved during the 2023 Grandma’s Marathon, where he also set a record as the fastest U.S.-born Black marathoner.

Women’s Race Results

In further results, Enyew Nigat of Kenya secured third place, finishing the race in 2:14:23. On the women’s side, Priscah Cherono, a 45-year-old mother of three and former Olympic competitor, triumphed with a time of 2:25:20, marking a remarkable feat that it seems comes after her training in Colorado Springs. Following Cherono was Kellyn Taylor from Flagstaff, Arizona, who finished second in 2:27:37, while Antonina Kwambai, also from Kenya, placed third with a time of 2:28:50.

Safety Measures and Event Overview

Due to rising temperatures projected to surpass the 80-degree mark, race organizers implemented a contingency plan, allowing participants who finished at least 18 miles to receive medals, prioritizing the runners’ safety amid challenging conditions. The marathon commenced at Dodger Stadium and concluded in the bustling Century City area of Los Angeles, showcasing not just athletic endurance but also the vibrant spirit of the city’s marathon culture.
