Nashville Predators at the 2026 NHL Trade Deadline
As the 2026 NHL Trade Deadline approaches, the Nashville Predators find themselves at a critical juncture, weighing their chances for a playoff run against the possibility of a roster overhaul. The team’s general manager, Barry Trotz, has been actively engaged in negotiations, making significant roster changes as the deadline looms.
Recent Trades and Roster Changes
On March 5, the team made a notable move by trading defenseman Nick Blankenburg to the Colorado Avalanche for a fifth-round draft pick in 2027. This trade underscores Nashville’s strategy to accumulate future assets, as they now hold a total of 12 picks for the upcoming 2027 NHL Draft, including four in the third round. Blankenburg, who has had a standout season with 21 points (6 goals, 15 assists) in 49 games before being traded, was in the final year of his two-year contract and set to become an unrestricted free agent at season’s end.
Meanwhile, the Predators have also seen substantial personnel changes on their active roster. Following the Blankenburg trade, the team announced the recall of three players from the Milwaukee Admirals: left winger Reid Schaefer, defenseman Ryan Ufko, and center Fedor Svechkov. Schaefer, a rookie who has made 27 appearances for the Predators this season, has shown promise with 6 points while excelling in the AHL with 28 points over 31 games. This call-up marks Ufko’s first elevation to the NHL this season—he stands out as a top defenseman in the AHL, securing 44 points and earning an All-Star nod.
Svechkov, who has spent considerable time with the Predators this year, is returning after a spurt in Milwaukee where he accumulated 8 points in just 10 games. These call-ups suggest Nashville is bracing for further trades, with multiple key players out of the lineup including a defenseman, a center, and a winger.
Additional Transactions
In addition to Blankenburg, the Predators executed two more trades on March 4. The first involved forward Cole Smith being sent to the Vegas Golden Knights in exchange for defenseman Christoffer Sedoff and a third-round pick in 2028. Sedoff has yet to make his NHL debut but has consistently played with the Henderson Silver Knights in the AHL. Smith, who only saw three seconds of ice time in a recent game, leaves the team with 10 points this season in 41 games, and he is also in the last year of his contract.
Another transaction saw Michael McCarron moved to the Minnesota Wild for a second-round pick in 2028. McCarron, a towering center, has recorded 12 points across 59 games this season, but was scratched prior to the recent matchup against the Columbus Blue Jackets due to what the team termed “roster management purposes.”
Looking Ahead
As the trade deadline draws near, all eyes are on Nashville’s decisions, which could define the direction of the franchise as they aim to remain competitive in the NHL. With the potential for further trades still on the table, the Predators are posed to either push for a playoff spot or begin a significant roster reconfiguration for next season.
