Colorado Avalanche Face Mounting Challenges
The Colorado Avalanche find themselves in a precarious position, trailing the Vegas Golden Knights 3-0 in the Western Conference Finals. Beyond their on-ice struggles, the team has been decimated by injuries to key players. Most recently, Nathan MacKinnon suffered a knee injury, compounding matters just as Cale Makar returned from an upper-body ailment. These mounting difficulties have sparked widespread speculation about potential organizational changes, particularly regarding the coaching staff.
Front Office Uncertainty and Leadership Recruitment
Colorado’s front office structure may be undergoing significant shifts. According to reporting from Toronto Star journalist Jonah Sigel on May 23, the Nashville Predators are pursuing General Manager Chris MacFarland to serve as their Vice-President of Hockey Operations—a promotion from his current role with Colorado.
This recruitment effort aligns with Nashville’s succession planning following Barry Trotz’s announcement that he would retire from his positions as both General Manager and President of Hockey Operations. The Predators, facing a rebuilding phase with numerous expiring contracts and limited long-term certainty, have been conducting a broad search for leadership. Candidates reportedly under consideration include former New Jersey Devils executive Tom Fitzgerald, Florida Panthers assistant general manager Brett Peterson, and several other seasoned hockey executives.
However, sports journalist Elliotte Friedman provided crucial context during his podcast 32 Thoughts, clarifying that Nashville currently lacks permission to formally interview MacFarland, and no agreement exists between the parties. Friedman emphasized that describing any arrangement as a
“done deal” would be premature at this stage
.
From a contractual standpoint, Colorado possesses limited leverage to prevent MacFarland from exploring opportunities, though the team can restrict interview requests under his current contract—similar to Vegas’s approach with coach Bruce Cassidy. The core question becomes whether MacFarland would genuinely abandon a championship-contending team he helped construct for a rebuilding franchise, despite the titular promotion the Predators would offer.
