NASCAR Adjusts Schedule for The Clash Due to Winter Weather
In anticipation of predicted winter weather, NASCAR has made significant changes to the schedule for the upcoming exhibition race, The Clash, at Bowman Gray Stadium located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Originally planned as a two-day event commencing on Saturday, the race weekend will now be condensed into a single day, primarily due to lingering icy conditions from a previous storm and the forecast of an additional 12 inches of snow expected this Saturday.
Winter Storm Watch and Schedule Changes
The area is currently under a winter storm watch that extends through 1 p.m. EST on Sunday. As a result, all activities initially planned for Saturday have been canceled. NASCAR is now looking to conduct practice sessions starting at 2 p.m. on Sunday, with the main race event scheduled for 6 p.m. Despite the chilly temperatures, NASCAR is confident that their Goodyear tires will maintain adequate traction on the quarter-mile track.
Contingency Plans and Event Structure
Whether the race will proceed on Sunday heavily relies on the accumulation of snow throughout the day. In the event that The Clash cannot take place this weekend, NASCAR is ready to reschedule it for the next feasible clear day, as teams will be heading to Daytona Beach, Florida, shortly after February 9 for preparations for the Daytona 500, which is the official start of the NASCAR season.
With the transition to a one-day format, the structure of the event has been adapted. Driver participation will be organized into three groups, with each group allotted three practice sessions. The results from the final practice session will be crucial as they will dictate the starting positions for the main race and the last chance qualifier. The heat races that were slated for Saturday have been abolished, and instead, a single 75-lap last chance qualifier will be held on Sunday, where two drivers will earn their spots in the main race. Additionally, the final position in the event will be awarded to the highest-ranked driver in points who has not yet qualified. Notably, two-time NASCAR champion Kyle Larson is assured a place in the race.
Main Race Details
The main competition itself will consist of 200 laps, with a brief halftime break at the 100-lap mark. Chase Elliott emerged victorious in the previous year’s edition of The Clash.
