LPGA Tournament of Champions: Opening Round Highlights

In the opening round of the LPGA’s Tournament of Champions held at the scenic Lake Nona Golf & Country Club in Orlando, Florida, Japan’s Nasa Hataoka fired an impressive 6-under 66, placing her a stroke ahead of several top players. Among those trailing her are Jeeno Thitikul, the reigning LPGA Player of the Year, along with Chanettee Wannasaen, Lottie Woad, and Linn Grant.

Strong Performance by Hataoka

Hataoka’s performance was particularly strong on the back nine, where she recorded four birdies, setting a positive tone for the tournament. This outstanding round is a continuation of Hataoka’s strong finish from the previous season, where she clinched her first LPGA title in almost three years at the Japan Classic in November, edging out Yuna Araki in a playoff.

Thitikul’s Continued Success

On the heels of her exceptional breakout year, Thitikul, who has etched her name in LPGA history with her remarkable achievements, showcased her talent again with six birdies while managing just one bogey. Her previous season included winning three tournaments, such as the Tour Championship, and achieving remarkable rankings, making her one of the standout players in the league’s extensive history.

Impressive Rounds from Other Contenders

Chanettee Wannasaen also shone with an impressive round of 67, featuring seven birdies. Grant matched her at 5-under, finishing strong with two consecutive birdies on her final holes. Woad had a brief spell at 6 under but fell back due to a late bogey on the challenging par-4 finishing hole.

Korda and Defending Champion’s Performance

Nelly Korda, who was the runner-up in the same tournament the previous year, is positioned alongside Amy Yang and Linn Grant, all just a stroke behind. Korda’s highlight came on the par-4 seventh hole, where her approach shot nearly found the hole, resulting in an easy tap-in for birdie. She finished the day at 68, after suffering a couple of late bogeys that brought her score down to 6 under overall.

Defending champion A Lim Kim is currently sitting at 3 under, alongside notable players like Lydia Ko and Ingrid Lindblad, as they all aim for a strong comeback in the ensuing rounds of this prestigious tournament.
