Murray State Racers Secure Second Consecutive Title
In a commanding victory, the Murray State Racers secured their second consecutive Missouri Valley Conference Tournament title, defeating the Evansville Purple Aces 91-70 in Coralville, Iowa, on Sunday. This triumph grants Murray State an automatic entry into the NCAA Tournament. Under the guidance of coach Rechelle Turner in her ninth season, the Racers, boasting an impressive record of 31 wins against just 3 losses, are on a remarkable 15-game winning streak heading into the national spotlight.
Standout Performers
Halli Poock was the standout performer for Murray State, netting 33 points with an impressive shooting percentage of 63.2%, hitting 12 of 19 attempts from the field, including six three-pointers. Her teammate, Shamecce Currie-Jelks, contributed significantly with a double-double of 12 points and a staggering 16 rebounds, along with seven assists. Haven Ford also played a crucial role, sinking four threes and totaling 18 points, while Keslyn Secrist added 12 points to the tally.
Evansville’s Resilience
Despite being a 10th seed with a season record of 10-25, Evansville had shown remarkable resilience in the tournament by knocking off second-seeded Belmont and third-seeded Illinois State in previous rounds. Their leading scorer off the bench, Mireia Mustaros, finished with 16 points. Other notable contributions came from Sydney Huber and Breaunna Ward, who each scored 15 points, with Camryn Runner adding 12.
Game Highlights
The Racers established dominance early in the game, initiating a 13-0 run that culminated in a 16-4 lead within the first five minutes. By the end of the first quarter, Murray State was ahead 21-10, thanks largely to Poock’s early shooting spree. The team extended their lead to 28-10 shortly into the second quarter, eventually leading 46-27 at halftime. Continuing their strong performance, they outscored Evansville 24-17 in the third quarter, setting the stage for their eventual victory.
Looking Ahead
With this win, Murray State is poised to make a notable appearance in the NCAA Tournament, a feat not achieved since their last championship run in 2008. This latest success underscores the Racers’ strong positioning within collegiate women’s basketball as they prepare for the challenges ahead in the national arena.
