Andy Murray Reflects on Coaching Novak Djokovic
In a recent interview, former tennis star Andy Murray revealed his feelings of disappointment regarding Novak Djokovic’s performance during their brief coaching relationship. Murray, who transitioned to a coaching role with Djokovic shortly after concluding his own playing career at the Paris Olympics in August 2024, had anticipated greater outcomes during their partnership.
Brief Coaching Collaboration
Commencing in November 2024, the collaboration lasted a mere six months, wherein they participated in the Australian Open and five other tournaments together. Reflecting on the experience, Murray expressed that despite the partnership’s brevity, he values the opportunity to have coached such a prominent player.
“I’m glad that I did it. It was an amazing experience… I was disappointed. Probably didn’t get the results I would have liked for him,”
he commented on The Tennis Podcast.
Challenges Faced by Djokovic
Djokovic’s journey during this period was marked by significant challenges. At the Australian Open, he faced Carlos Alcaraz and advanced to the semifinals, but sustained a tear in his left hamstring during the match, leading to an unfortunate retirement after just one set against Alexander Zverev, which resulted in a hostile response from the crowd. Following his return to the circuit, Djokovic struggled with early exits in tournaments including Qatar and Indian Wells, although he did make it to the final at the Miami Open, where he ultimately lost to Czech young talent Jakub Mensik.
Conclusion of the Partnership
Murray’s initial intention was to guide Djokovic through the French Open; however, the partnership concluded in May 2025 after disappointing defeats in clay court tournaments in Monte Carlo and Madrid.
“It was going well initially, and it was unfortunate what happened in Australia with the injury,”
he added, acknowledging the challenging months that followed. Throughout this experience, Murray emphasized the lessons he took away about the coaching role and formed significant connections within Djokovic’s team, underscoring his commitment during the six-month stint.
