Liverpool Winger Criticizes UEFA
Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah has publicly criticized UEFA for its lack of transparency regarding the circumstances surrounding the death of Suleiman Al-Obeid, a renowned Palestinian footballer often referred to as the “Palestinian Pele.”
Details of the Incident
The Palestinian Football Association (PFA) reported that the 41-year-old Al-Obeid was killed during an Israeli airstrike in Gaza. UEFA paid tribute to Al-Obeid on social media, describing him as a gifted athlete who inspired countless children even amid significant adversities.
Salah’s Response
In a response shared on X, Salah questioned UEFA’s tribute, asking, “Can you tell us how he died, where, and why?”
The 33-year-old Egyptian star, who has a massive following of over 19 million on social media, has been vocal about the ongoing violence and humanitarian crisis in the region. Earlier in October, Salah expressed his sorrow over the escalating conflict, stating:
“There has been too much violence, and too much heartbreak and brutality. It is unbearable to witness. All lives are sacred and must be protected. The massacres need to stop. Families are being torn apart.”
Legacy of Suleiman Al-Obeid
The PFA noted that Al-Obeid, who leaves behind a wife and five children (two sons and three daughters), represented the Palestinian national team in 24 matches, contributing two goals during his career. The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) have been contacted for further comments regarding the incident, but no response has been indicated as of now.
