Knicks Face Defeat Against 76ers
In an intense matchup on Friday night, the New York Knicks faced a tough defeat against the Philadelphia 76ers, losing 116-107 at Madison Square Garden. Despite the outcome, one silver lining emerged as Mitchell Robinson showcased his impressive offensive skills for the first time this season. The 24-year-old center’s notable improvement at the free-throw line was a significant factor in his performance, where he scored a season-high 21 points.
Robinson’s Free-Throw Improvement
Prior to this game, Robinson struggled significantly with free throws, converting just 6 out of 27 attempts in the season. However, he turned the tables remarkably against the 76ers, hitting 7 of 8 attempts from the charity stripe. After the game, head coach Mike Brown praised Robinson’s dedication to improving his shooting technique.
“He’s been working hard at it. It’s a process… Mitch has bought into what they are trying to work with him on when it comes to free-throw shooting. Anytime you can see positive results, it breeds confidence not just in the individual but also in the rest of the group,”
Brown said.
Teammates’ Praise and Support
Robinson’s teammates were quick to commend his relentless work ethic. Josh Hart noted that Robinson’s early morning shooting sessions are paying off. Similarly, Tyler Kolek emphasized that consistent practice with shooting coach Peter Patton has enhanced Robinson’s skills.
“He’s got all the touch on the offensive rebounds… just a mindset to get his touch at the free-throw line,”
Kolek stated.
Jalen Brunson also shared words of encouragement, highlighting that Robinson’s concentration and progress are commendable.
“Very happy for him, very proud of him. Just gotta have to continue it,”
Brunson remarked. Robinson explained that his coaches advised him to adjust his shot by adding more arc to his free throws instead of his typical flat shots.
Robinson’s Game Day Routine
Robinson’s early morning practice on game day included a session at 10 a.m., and he plans to incorporate this routine moving forward.
“Feel way more comfortable, getting my elbow in the air a little more,”
he explained, reflecting on the positive change in his shooting mechanics and overall confidence. Notably, Robinson had never before achieved such success at the free-throw line, even capitalizing on the 76ers’ hack-a-Mitch strategy during the game.
Robinson’s Overall Performance
Despite the exhaustion that came from a demanding schedule, which saw teammates like OG Anunoby and Hart struggling to score, Robinson’s contributions were vital. Brunson acknowledged that Robinson consistently impacts the game, regardless of his scoring success. Robinson, alongside his 21 points, also recorded 16 rebounds, marking his first double-double of the season, along with two blocks, a steal, and an assist.
“Just the energy, my teammates… I was just trying to help there,”
Robinson said of his performance. He expressed disappointment in not securing a win, although his individual performance felt rewarding. Looking forward, he aims to maintain this momentum as the Knicks prepare to face the Miami Heat at home on Sunday.
