Mirra Andreeva Triumphs at the French Open
In an impressive showing at the French Open, Mirra Andreeva triumphed over Kazakh player Yulia Putintseva with a decisive 6-3, 6-1 victory in the third round. Before the match, the Russian sensation received a heartfelt gift—a colorful fabric patch adorned with floral designs—thanks to a young fan, which she credited as her “lucky charm.”
Reflecting on her pre-match ritual, the 18-year-old expressed her gratitude, saying, “When I was walking on court, a little girl put a drawing on my bench, and I kept it. Wherever that little girl is, I want to thank her because it is my lucky charm.”
This marked Andreeva’s third appearance at the French Open, where she notably reached the semi-finals last year before falling to Jasmine Paolini. The rising star is currently the world number six, building momentum after capturing titles at both the Indian Wells tournament and the Dubai Tennis Championships earlier this season.
Match Highlights
After securing three breaks against Putintseva in the opening set, Andreeva showcased her skill by taking an early lead in the second but encountered a rain delay. Upon resuming play, she faced a brief challenge as Putintseva took a 3-2 advantage. However, Andreeva quickly regained control, winning the following four games to seal her spot in the fourth round, where she will meet her friend, Daria Kasatkina.
Upcoming Matches and Other Results
Kasatkina is making headlines herself, having recently changed her national allegiance from Russia to Australia, and she advanced by defeating Spanish 10th seed Paula Badosa with a score of 6-1, 7-5.
In other matches, third-seeded Jessica Pegula survived a tough battle against former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova, rallying to win the match 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. The American, who missed last year’s clay-court Grand Slam, aims to reach the quarter-finals in Paris for the second time. Pegula’s next opponent will either be Lois Boisson, ranked 361st globally, or Elsa Jacquemot, who holds the 138th spot.
