Minnesota Wild bolsters center position with Michael McCarron trade from Nashville Predators

NHL Trade Deadline Moves

Ahead of the NHL trade deadline, the Minnesota Wild have addressed their need for strength at the center position by trading for Michael McCarron from the Nashville Predators. The Wild parted ways with a second-round draft pick set for 2028 in exchange for the 6-foot-6 McCarron, who is expected to bolster their depth rather than serve as a lead player on the top offensive lines.

This decision marks the team’s second acquisition in as many days, following Monday’s decision to claim forward Robby Fabbri off waivers from the St. Louis Blues.

Previous Trades and Future Speculations

The Minnesota Wild’s general manager, Bill Guerin, had previously made a significant move in December when he secured elite defenseman Quinn Hughes from the Vancouver Canucks, handing over promising center Marco Rossi in that deal. This trade not only improved the team’s defensive lineup but also diminished their options at the center position.

As the trade deadline approaches, speculation continues regarding Guerin’s future moves. The Wild have been associated with interest in New York Rangers center Vincent Trocheck, a player who has expressed a preference for remaining close to the East Coast due to family commitments. However, Trocheck would likely come at a higher price compared to McCarron.

Impact on Team Performance

McCarron’s presence is anticipated to improve the Wild’s faceoff performance, where they currently hold one of the worst standings in the league with a success rate of just 46.2%. In contrast, McCarron has averaged a notable 52.8% success in faceoffs over his first 59 games this season, a stat that aligns with the team’s goal to enhance their performance before the deadline on Friday at 3 p.m. EST.
