Mike Tyson Supports the Muhammad Ali American Boxing Revival Act

The legendary former heavyweight boxing champion, Mike Tyson, has come out in favor of the Muhammad Ali American Boxing Revival Act. This initiative, which aims to amend the existing Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform Act from 2000, has garnered the attention of notable figures including UFC’s CEO, Dana White, and his Zuffa Boxing promotion. Originally introduced by Congressman Brian Jack (R-Georgia) alongside Representative Sharice Davids (D-Kansas), the proposal seeks to bolster protections against the exploitation of boxers in the sport.

Criticism and Support

Despite its supportive endorsements, the Revival Act has faced pushback from segments of the boxing community. Critics argue that White’s involvement is primarily driven by a desire to replicate the lower pay structure of UFC fighters for boxers, in order to exert tighter control through a new ranking system and sanctioning body.

Tyson, who maintains a close friendship with White, expressed his admiration for Muhammad Ali in his statement to the U.S. House Committee on Education & Workforce. He emphasized the importance of the revisions in upholding the ethos of the original Ali Act and closing existing loopholes that could allow promoters to monopolize fighters’ careers.

“This legislation is about restoring balance, giving boxers the freedom to pursue their own paths while maintaining the sport’s integrity,”

Tyson stated. He further highlighted that for those content with the current boxing landscape, this act merely opens alternative career avenues without disrupting their existing opportunities.

Health Insurance for Fighters

In his remarks, Tyson underscored the necessity for implementation of mandatory health insurance for fighters, indicating that no athlete should have to make the distressing choice between seeking medical attention and advancing their career.

Clarifications from Zuffa Boxing

Representatives for Zuffa Boxing have clarified to ESPN that the proposed changes will not modify the current language of the Ali Act but rather aim to enhance its provisions for the betterment of boxers in the future. Congressman Jack expressed his appreciation of Tyson’s endorsement, stating,

“His monumental achievements in boxing go beyond the rung of success; he is a true emblem in American culture. Tyson’s support of the Muhammad Ali American Boxing Revival Act symbolizes a commitment to securing better options and protections for boxers today.”
