Mike Conley Jr. Returns to the Minnesota Timberwolves
Mike Conley Jr. is set to rejoin the Minnesota Timberwolves following an eventful stretch leading up to the NBA trade deadline. According to a report from Michael Scotto of Hoops Hype, the seasoned 38-year-old point guard has finalized a deal to return to Minnesota after recently being traded twice and subsequently released from the Charlotte Hornets.
Conley’s Whirlwind Journey
Conley’s whirlwind journey kicked off when he was moved from the Timberwolves to the Chicago Bulls in a complex three-team trade. This deal, which involved Kevin Huerter and Dario Šarić heading to the Detroit Pistons, also saw the Pistons acquire a 2026 protected first-round draft pick swap with Minnesota and included Jaden Ivey moving to the Bulls.
Just a day later, his path led him to the Hornets, alongside Coby White, in exchange for Collin Sexton along with three second-round picks. The Bulls managed another acquisition by bringing Ousmane Dieng from Charlotte, while the Oklahoma City Thunder secured Mason Plumlee in the mix. Despite these transactions, neither the Bulls nor the Hornets were inclined to retain Conley and his contract for $10.7 million for the 2025-26 season, setting him up for free agency following the current season.
Unique Circumstances of Return
In a twist of NBA regulations, although players cannot be traded and then re-signed after being waived, Conley’s unique circumstance of being traded again before his release allowed him to return to the Timberwolves. This marks his fourth season with Minnesota, where he rejoins a roster that has recently welcomed Ayo Dosunmu and Julian Phillips through a different deadline deal.
Conley’s Performance and Career Overview
Before these trades, Conley had struggled with injuries, averaging just 4.4 points, 2.9 assists, and 1.8 rebounds over the 44 games he played this season due to back issues and Achilles tendinopathy. Over a notable 19-year NBA career that includes 12 seasons with the Memphis Grizzlies and four with the Utah Jazz, he boasts averages of 13.7 points and 5.6 assists, with a three-point shooting percentage of 39%.
Currently, Minnesota holds a 34-22 record, positioning them in sixth place in the Western Conference.
