Calgary Flames Captain Achieves Milestone
During an exhilarating matchup on Thursday night, Calgary Flames‘ captain Mikael Backlund marked a significant milestone in his impressive career by scoring his 600th NHL point in a thrilling 5-4 win over the New Jersey Devils. This achievement came when Backlund netted the decisive goal in the third period, which also marked his 229th career goal. As a result, he now shares a spot as the fifth all-time leading goal scorer for the Flames with the legendary Kent Nilsson, a feat that Backlund expressed great admiration for.
Reflections on the Achievement
In a post-game interview, Backlund reflected on the honor of being compared to Nilsson, stating, “It’s really cool to be talked about with a player like that… it’s an honour to be tied with him.”
Adding another personal touch to the evening, the pivotal goal was scored against fellow countryman and former Flames teammate Jacob Markstrom, who is now the goaltender for New Jersey. Backlund noted, “Feels good to score and help the team win… and do it at the same time (as) 600.”
Coach’s Praise and Season Performance
Flames head coach Ryan Huska congratulated Backlund on this career milestone, emphasizing how deserving it is for someone who has dedicated so much to the organization. “Happy for him… that’s a great milestone for a guy that’s given a lot to this organization,” Huska remarked after the game.
This season, Backlund has demonstrated consistency and leadership, currently leading the Flames with 14 goals and 23 assists, accumulating 37 points across 65 games, alongside a notable plus-11 rating. His enduring contribution to the team further solidifies his place as a vital player in the franchise’s history, having spent his entire NHL career with the Flames since debuting in the league.
