Michigan Edges Iowa 71-68 as Mara Delivers Late Game Heroics

Michigan Triumphs Over Iowa in Thrilling Contest

In an exhilarating contest on Thursday evening, No. 3 Michigan narrowly triumphed over Iowa, clinching a 71-68 victory. The win bolstered Michigan’s impressive record, improving them to 28 wins against 2 losses and securing an 18-1 standing in the Big Ten. Despite their subpar offensive performance, which saw them score 18 points less than their average, the Wolverines displayed resilience in the game’s final moments.

Key Players Shine

Both Morez Johnson Jr. and Yaxel Lendeborg were pivotal for Michigan, each contributing 16 points to the scoreboard. Meanwhile, Aday Mara emerged as a clutch player, sinking two crucial shots within the last 1:22 of play that ultimately sealed the game. Mara tallied 14 points overall, showcasing his efficiency by hitting 7 of 10 attempts from the field.

Game Highlights

Iowa, fighting hard, had managed to tie the game at 64 points with just under two minutes on the clock thanks to an 11-1 scoring blitz. However, Mara soon answered with a bank shot just before the shot clock expired, regaining the lead for Michigan.

After Cam Manyawu tied the game again for Iowa at 66, Mara once again came through, scoring off a lob pass 43 seconds before the final buzzer.

The Hawkeyes had opportunities to tie the score in the waning seconds but faltered on back-to-back possessions. A costly turnover by Tavion Banks gave Michigan possession, and after Lendeborg extended their lead with two free throws, Iowa’s Bennett Stirtz had a chance to even the score with a last-second 3-pointer, which fell short.

Team Performance

For Iowa, Stirtz emerged as the top scorer with 21 points, while Manyawu chipped in 14 points. Despite a challenging shooting night for Iowa, which saw them make only 11 of 31 attempts in the first half and struggle to convert turnovers into points, they managed to stay competitive.

The teams were deadlocked at 30 by halftime, with Michigan out-rebounding Iowa 38-25 throughout the game; however, the Wolverines’ 12 turnovers led to 16 points for the Hawkeyes, highlighting the importance of ball control in this closely contested matchup.
