Miami of Ohio Women’s Basketball Triumphs
In a decisive matchup on Saturday, the Miami of Ohio women’s basketball team triumphed over No. 6 seeded Toledo with a scoreline of 68-58, securing their place in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2008. This victory marks not only the second Mid-American Conference (MAC) Championship in the history of the RedHawks but also the inaugural title for head coach Glenn Box, who is in his third year at the helm.
Standout Performers
Amber Tretter was a standout performer, scoring 23 points and achieving her 31st career double-double, which includes 10 for this season. Other key contributions came from Ilse de Vries, who added 17 points, while Amber Scalia and Tamar Singer chipped in with 14 and 13 points, respectively.
Game Highlights
Miami made a strong start, dominating the first quarter with a blistering 16-0 run, keeping Toledo scoreless for over seven minutes. Going into halftime, the RedHawks held a comfortable 28-16 lead, capitalizing on Toledo’s lowest-scoring half of the season.
However, the Rockets, with Patricia Anumgba—who had been averaging 24 points during the tournament—leading the charge, fought back in the third quarter. Anumgba finished the game with 22 points and eight rebounds, helping Toledo to narrow the gap to 56-50 with a critical three-pointer in the final minutes.
Sealing the Victory
Miami sealed their victory in the closing moments when Singer made a crucial three-point play, allowing the RedHawks to convert key free throws to maintain their lead. The win was particularly significant as it was the second victory of the season for Miami against Toledo, having previously defeated them 63-55 during their regular-season match on January 3 in Oxford.
Looking Ahead
With a season record of 28-6, the RedHawks now can look forward to the NCAA Tournament starting March 20, where they will seek to make their mark for the first time in over a decade.
