Mel Bridgman, Former GM of Ottawa Senators and NHL Veteran, Dies at 70

In Memoriam: Mel Bridgman

The hockey community is mourning the loss of Mel Bridgman, who passed away at the age of 70, shortly after the conclusion of a game between the Ottawa Senators and the Philadelphia Flyers. Bridgman had significant connections to both teams, serving as the inaugural General Manager for the Senators and gaining recognition as a skilled player, particularly with the Flyers.

Historic Draft and NHL Career

Bridgman made history in 1975 when he was selected first overall by the Flyers during the NHL Draft, a remarkable feat considering the team had just won consecutive Stanley Cup championships. They obtained that pick through a trade, marking the only time in franchise history that Philadelphia has ever chosen first in the draft.

During his NHL career, Bridgman played 462 games with the Flyers before moving on to other teams, including the Calgary Flames, New Jersey Devils, Detroit Red Wings, and Vancouver Canucks. Across his 977 regular-season games from 1975 to 1989, he amassed 701 points and showcased his determination with a total of 1,625 penalty minutes, earning a reputation as a tough player who could hold his own in fights—attributes that aligned perfectly with the Flyers’ notorious 1970s teams known as the Broad Street Bullies.

Legacy as General Manager

After hanging up his skates, he joined the newly re-established Ottawa Senators in 1992 as their first general manager, despite his limited experience in management. At that time, the NHL’s expansion draft rules heavily favored established teams, making it exceptionally challenging for newcomers. However, Bridgman’s proximity to the game allowed him to effectively engage with his new role.

His experience with the Senators was not without its hiccups, encountering some technical issues on draft day, but he successfully drafted Alexei Yashin with the second overall pick, who became the sole Senator to receive a Hart Trophy nomination.

Tributes and Condolences

In light of Bridgman’s passing, the Ottawa Senators released a heartfelt statement expressing their sorrow, stating:

“The Ottawa Senators are saddened to learn that Mel Bridgman has passed away. After a stellar playing career in the NHL, Mel served as our first general manager when we returned to the NHL for the 1992-93 season. He presided over our inaugural entry draft, where the club selected Alexei Yashin with the second overall selection. The Ottawa Senators organization sends its deepest sympathies to Mel’s loved ones at this difficult time.”

The Flyers also commemorated Bridgman’s legacy, while the NHL Alumni Association shared the news of his passing, although details regarding the cause of death remain undisclosed.
