McLellan Remains Uncertain on Lineup for Red Wings Season Opener

Detroit Red Wings Training Camp

The Detroit Red Wings have kicked off their training camp at Center I.C.E. Arena in Traverse City, Michigan, a location steeped in hockey tradition since former head coach Scotty Bowman first began using it in 1997. Fans spanning multiple generations descended upon the rink, eager to witness both fresh talent and beloved veterans as they engaged in drills and scrimmages on the ice.

Coaching and Player Dynamics

Central to the camp is head coach Todd McLellan, who returned to the organization last December following the dismissal of Derek Lalonde. McLellan has a storied history with the Red Wings, having served as an assistant coach from 2005 to 2008, a period that culminated in a Stanley Cup victory before he took on a head coaching role with the San Jose Sharks.

In terms of player combinations, notable chemistry was evident on the ice, particularly between Marco Kasper, Patrick Kane, and Alex DeBrincat, who skated together throughout the camp. This trio’s synergy is bolstered by the previous connection between DeBrincat and Kane from their days with the Chicago Blackhawks, which played a significant role in Kane’s decision to join the Red Wings as an unrestricted free agent in December 2023.

“Cat and Kaner have that instinctive, ‘I know where you are, I know where you’re going to release the puck’ relationship,” McLellan remarked, highlighting the understanding the players have developed over the years.

Kasper, who joined the Red Wings full-time after being promoted from the American Hockey League’s Grand Rapids Griffins last October, has notably flourished alongside Kane and DeBrincat. McLellan praised his ability to rise to the occasion, saying,

“Kasper complemented both of them; they needed someone to do the dirty work defensively. He didn’t buckle under the pressure of playing with two potential Hall of Famers, and that was impressive.”

Looking Ahead

As for the line’s prospects on the ice for the season opener at Little Caesars Arena on October 9 against the Montreal Canadiens, McLellan remains noncommittal, stating,

“I can’t tell you if they’ll start together on Opening Night. We’re still three and a half weeks out, and we’ll finalize everything as that time approaches.”
