Mavericks’ Anthony Davis Faces Extended Recovery Period of Up to 10 Days

Mavericks Announce Anthony Davis’ Extended Absence

In Dallas, the Mavericks announced on Sunday evening that power forward/center Anthony Davis will be sidelined for an extended period, with a recovery timeline of seven to ten additional days due to a strain in his left calf. This absence will mark his ninth consecutive game out, as Davis has been unable to play since the injury occurred.

Status Update and Team Commitment

The update on his status followed a reevaluation over the weekend. Mavs head coach Jason Kidd expressed Davis’ eagerness to return, highlighting his commitment to the team:

“He wants to be out there to help us. But this gives him seven to 10 days to get better or to get stronger. Hopefully, in seven to 10 days, he’s back on the floor.”

Initially, Davis was hopeful of making a comeback for the Mavericks’ match against the Washington Wizards on November 8, the team’s sole victory so far this month. However, this timeline was later revised following a directive from the team’s governor, Patrick Dumont. Reports indicate that Dumont insisted on rigorous medical assessments before allowing Davis to play, emphasizing that no risk of worsening the injury or suffering a severe related injury could be allowed.

Cautious Approach to Recovery

Dumont’s stance came after a meeting with individuals involved in Davis’ rehabilitation, where he supported the cautious approach suggested by Mavs director of health and performance Johann Bilsborough. This decision contrasts with the clearance from Davis’ personal medical team, which was recently added to the Mavericks’ staff.

Concerns Over Serious Injury

A significant concern regarding Davis’ return is the potential for a serious injury, including a possible rupture of the left Achilles tendon, which happened to Indiana Pacers’ Tyrese Haliburton during the NBA Finals after he returned too quickly from a calf issue.

Impact of the Trade

Since the controversial trade that brought Davis to the Mavericks in exchange for Luka Doncic, he has played in only 14 games and participated in a few play-in tournament matches. Following his acquisition, Davis was managing an abdominal injury which led to a rushed return for a home game against the Houston Rockets, where he excelled temporarily before suffering a related adductor strain that sidelined him for six weeks. The trade not only affected Davis’ play but also resulted in the dismissal of Mavs GM Nico Harrison just days ago.
