Matthew Knies’ Availability Questioned as Maple Leafs Prepare to Face Wild, Scott Laughton Steps Up

Toronto Maple Leafs Face Uncertainty with Matthew Knies

The Toronto Maple Leafs are currently facing uncertainty regarding the availability of young forward Matthew Knies for their upcoming matchup against the Minnesota Wild, set for Monday night at Scotiabank Arena. Coach Craig Berube disclosed that Knies, 23, has been struggling with an undisclosed injury that has persisted for a significant amount of time, affecting his performance since before the holiday season. This injury has caused considerable discomfort for Knies, who missed Monday’s morning skate.

Berube remarked on Knies’ ongoing issue, noting that while there have been brief improvements during breaks like Christmas, the ailment remains a concern.

Throughout the current season, Knies has missed three games, all of which occurred in November, and he has contributed 12 goals and 40 points across 45 games thus far, making him the fourth-highest scorer on the team.

Lineup Adjustments and Game Details

To cover for Knies, Scott Laughton has filled his position on the second line, playing alongside John Tavares and Matias Maccelli during the morning practice. Laughton’s elevated role indicates a dwindling likelihood of Knies playing against the Wild. As for the rest of the lineup during the skate, it included a combination of familiar faces in various configurations. In this new arrangement, Jacob Quillan has also been promoted to center the fourth line, playing alongside Steven Lorentz and Calle Jarnkrok, following a strong performance in the AHL where he scored a hat-trick recently.

Despite the challenges presented by Knies’ health, Laughton brings a solid track record to the ice, having netted two goals in his last six outings and leading the team with a 59.8 win percentage in face-offs this season.

Furthermore, the game against the Wild represents the first meeting between these two teams this season. Joseph Woll is projected to take the starting position as goaltender for Toronto. Fans should note that the game will start at 7:30 PM ET, which is a change from the usual schedule, as it will be featured on Prime Monday Night Hockey.
