Matt Turner Set for New England Revolution Loan from Lyon Amid Goalkeeping Challenges

Matt Turner Joins New England Revolution on Loan

In a significant move for both player and club, Matt Turner, who currently serves as the goalkeeper for the United States men’s national soccer team and plays for Lyon, is set to join the New England Revolution on loan until July 2026. This development was first reported by L’Equipe and confirmed by multiple sources to ESPN. The Blazing Musket, a local outlet from New England, initially hinted at the Revolution’s interest in securing Turner’s services.

Details of the Transfer

At 31 years old, Turner is expected to be classified as a Designated Player for the remainder of the 2025 season; however, he will not occupy this status in 2026. An official announcement regarding this transfer could be made later this week, and a press conference is anticipated as soon as Monday.

Turner’s Recent Challenges

This potential transfer marks the latest episode in an unusual few months for Turner, who has faced challenges securing playing time. Last season, on loan at Crystal Palace from Nottingham Forest, he appeared in just four matches— all in cup competitions. This limited involvement left him in a backup role during the recent Gold Cup, where he was behind New York City FC’s Matt Freese.

Earlier this summer, Turner had managed to move to Lyon for a fee reported to be $9.1 million. Yet, following organizational turmoil and fears of relegation due to financial challenges, Lyon attempted to retract the transfer that never made it to an official announcement. Stability returned with Michelle Kang taking over the presidency from John Textor, and Lyon ultimately retained its place in Ligue 1 through a successful appeal to the Direction Nationale du Controle de Gestion (DNCG), which oversees French soccer finances.

Implications for the U.S. National Team

This upcoming return to MLS is significant for Turner and aligns with U.S. national team coach Mauricio Pochettino‘s sentiments regarding goalkeeping competition. Pochettino highlighted that the spot for starting goalkeeper was still “open,” suggesting that Turner’s lack of consistent play could lead him to consider other options to compete regularly.

“He needs to find the way to compete every week,”

the coach remarked, underlining the urgency of Turner’s situation.

Turner’s Career Journey

Turner’s journey in professional soccer began with the New England Revolution in 2016 after a collegiate career at Fairfield University. By 2018, he had established himself as the starting goalkeeper for the Revolution and earned the title of MLS Goalkeeper of the Year in 2021. Following a transfer to Arsenal in early 2022, his time there was marred by limited game time, prompting a loan to Nottingham Forest for the 2022-23 season. After starting the season in goal, he lost his position due to inconsistent performances before being sent to Palace.

With 52 international appearances to his name, including four during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Turner’s anticipated move back to New England marks a pivotal moment in his career and could reignite his chances of reclaiming a more significant role within the national team.
