Matt Petgrave Joins Indy Fuel
In a significant development for both the player and the league, Matt Petgrave has officially joined the Indy Fuel, a team competing in the ECHL, which is a tier beneath the NHL. The announcement, made by the Fuel on Friday, marks Petgrave’s return to professional hockey after a challenging period following a tragic incident that occurred on October 28, 2023.
Tragic Incident and Aftermath
During a game in the Elite Ice Hockey League, Petgrave’s skate accidentally struck the neck of Adam Johnson, resulting in Johnson’s death. In the wake of this event, Petgrave faced scrutiny and was even arrested on suspicion of manslaughter. However, after an extensive investigation, local authorities cleared him of criminal charges in April, permitting him to resume his athletic pursuits.
Support from the Fuel Organization
Sean Hallett, CEO of Hallett Sports—owners of the Fuel—expressed confidence in Petgrave’s potential contributions to the team and community, stating the organization’s commitment to supporting him in his career.
“After in-depth discussions with him and his previous coaches and teammates, we believe he should be afforded the opportunity to continue his playing career,”
Hallett remarked.
Petgrave’s Reflections
Petgrave, who has also played extensively in Europe, expressed gratitude towards the Fuel and the Indianapolis community. He reflected on the support he has received, stating,
“I am thankful to the Fuel organization and the city of Indianapolis for allowing me the opportunity to continue my professional career in the sport I love.”
Career Background
Before embarking on his international career, the Toronto native gathered experience in the ECHL and the American Hockey League, earning All-Star honors in the 2017-18 season. With Petgrave’s return, the Indy Fuel aims to bolster their roster for the upcoming season while navigating the nuances surrounding his past.
