Mason Mount’s Aspirations with England
Mason Mount, currently striving to establish himself at Manchester United following his transfer from Chelsea for £60 million in 2023, has expressed a desire to return to the England squad. His aspirations received a boost after a recent conversation with new England manager Thomas Tuchel, which reignited his hopes of participating in the forthcoming 2026 World Cup.
Challenges and Determination
Mount has faced challenges with injuries over the past two seasons, limiting his contributions on the field; however, he is eager to demonstrate his abilities throughout this season. The 26-year-old midfielder, who was a vital player in England’s run to the Euro 2020 final, has not represented his country since the 2022 World Cup in Qatar due to these injury setbacks.
Reconnecting with Tuchel
During their call, Mount noted that Tuchel reached out to reconnect, having previously coached him at Chelsea, where they celebrated a Champions League victory together. “He mentioned he had contacted many players, and I felt it was great to see him again and hear his enthusiasm for his new role,” Mount remarked.
Understanding the Competition
Despite the heartwarming exchange, Mount acknowledged that Tuchel had not provided any assurances regarding his reinstatement in the national squad. He understands the competitive nature of securing a spot on the team, noting that the selection process differs significantly from club football.
“Competition is fierce now, and it’s clear that just because I played under him doesn’t guarantee me a place in the squad,” Mount said. However, he remains optimistic, aiming for a positive performance this season to enhance his chances for selection. “Playing for your country is an incredible honour, and I look forward to the possibility of wearing that jersey again, but my primary focus is on excelling at United first.”
