Mascherano takes responsibility for Inter Miami’s defeat and eyes redemption

Inter Miami CF Faces Defeat Against Chicago Fire FC

In a disappointing outing on Tuesday evening, Inter Miami CF faced a significant defeat against Chicago Fire FC, losing 5-3 at Chase Stadium. Head coach Javier Mascherano did not shy away from accountability, openly admitting that the loss stemmed from his tactical decisions.

Coach’s Accountability

Following a challenging first half, Mascherano expressed regret to his players, asserting that the issues they encountered had nothing to do with their performance but rather with his strategic approach to the game.

“I take full responsibility for the mistakes made. I apologized to the players at halftime for not being able to guide them effectively during the first half. The plan we laid out didn’t function as intended,”

he remarked.

The coach emphasized that the players shouldn’t shoulder any blame for the outcome, attributing the failings solely to his own planning. He had envisioned a match characterized by possession and control, which ultimately did not materialize.

“Unfortunately, we came into the match with a game plan that was not executed correctly. It was a shame for all of us, particularly since we expected to have more control over the play,”

Mascherano stated.

Impact on Season Goals

This defeat poses a significant hurdle for Inter Miami’s ambitions for the 2025 MLS Supporters’ Shield, as they currently find themselves in fourth place in the Eastern Conference standings with 56 points from 31 matches, trailing the Philadelphia Union by seven points. Despite this setback, the team has secured a spot in the playoffs after claiming the Supporters’ Shield title in 2024, although they were eliminated in the first round by Atlanta United FC.

“Our goal is to finish strong and aim for the highest position possible on the table before we enter the playoffs. We remain focused on competing for the championship,”

Mascherano continued. He acknowledged the team’s inconsistency this season but also highlighted the periods of strong performance they have managed to showcase. Looking forward, he feels confident that Miami possesses the necessary resources and capabilities to contend with any opponent in MLS.

Upcoming Match

Inter Miami will be looking to rebound from this setback on Saturday night, as they prepare for a home game against the New England Revolution.
