Mascherano Defends VIP Seat Decision After Red Card in Leagues Cup Quarterfinal

Mascherano Defends VIP Decision After Red Card

Inter Miami’s head coach, Javier Mascherano, defended his decision to sit in the VIP area rather than on the bench after receiving a red card during the Leagues Cup quarterfinal against Tigres UANL. During this match, held at Chase Stadium on Wednesday, Inter Miami triumphed over Tigres with a score of 2-1, even in the absence of Lionel Messi, who is recovering from a hamstring injury. The team has now progressed to face Orlando City in the semifinal scheduled for August 27.

Details of the Dismissal

Mascherano’s dismissal occurred early in the second half after a heated exchange with the fourth official regarding the additional time played at the end of the first half; the match referee originally allotted four minutes, but six minutes passed.

“I argued but did not insult him. That’s why I received a red card as I returned to the bench for the second half,”

Mascherano explained in a press conference.

VIP Section and Communication

Following his expulsion, the coach took his place in the VIP section located above the team’s bench, where he insisted he would adhere to Leagues Cup regulations.

“I complied with the rules; this area was still part of the stands, and I could’ve even opted for a suite. I felt it was crucial to remain accessible to my team during the game,”

he said, highlighting that his communication with the video analysts via cell phone was within acceptable limits according to tournament officials. A Leagues Cup spokesperson confirmed that Mascherano did not violate any rules by his actions.

Upcoming Matches and Player Status

Despite his troubles, Mascherano will be unable to coach in the upcoming semifinal due to the red card, with further disciplinary actions still pending evaluation by the committee.

“I will always prioritize what my players need,”

the coach remarked when discussing his position in the stands during the match.

As Inter Miami gears up for their next encounter against D.C. United this Saturday at Audi Field, Mascherano noted that Messi would not participate due to his ongoing recovery from injury, indicating a strategic focus on the Leagues Cup. Additionally, it appears Jordi Alba may also miss the match after sustaining a knee injury during the last game. Currently, Inter Miami holds the fifth position in the MLS Eastern Conference with 45 points, while D.C. United struggles at the bottom of the table with only 20 points from their last 11 matches without a win.
