Markus Nutivaara’s Return to Professional Hockey
Markus Nutivaara, a former defenseman with the Florida Panthers, is making a notable return to professional hockey by signing with Karpat, a prominent team in Finland’s Liiga. The 31-year-old last stepped onto the ice in a professional capacity during the 2021-22 NHL season, where he played one game and recorded an assist. After that season, he inked a deal with the San Jose Sharks, but did not participate in any games for the franchise. Remaining unsigned for two years, Nutivaara has now chosen to re-enter the sport, making a comeback to the team where he has roots, having played through various youth levels.
Early Career and NHL Journey
Originating from Oulu, Finland, Nutivaara began his hockey journey in the junior ranks with Karpat, competing at the U-16, U-18, and U-20 levels before moving up to their professional squad, where he contributed to a championship victory. His NHL career commenced after being drafted in 2015 by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the seventh round, 189th overall. He debuted in the 2016-17 season, achieving two goals and seven points across 66 games.
In 2018, Nutivaara secured a four-year deal worth $10.8 million with the Blue Jackets, but less than two years later, he was traded to the Panthers. During his stint with Florida, he played in 30 matches in the 2020-21 season, amassing 10 assists. However, his final season concluded with just one appearance due to injuries and limited opportunities, before signing a one-year contract worth $1.5 million with the Sharks, where he again did not see any action.
Looking Ahead
As he resumes his career with Karpat, Nutivaara is expected to join a talented roster that includes various NHL prospects and former players, potentially revitalizing his career and contributing to the team’s success in the competitive Finnish league.
