Mario Lemieux Ranks as CHL’s Top Player in 50-Year History

Canadian Hockey League Unveils Top 50 Players

In a recent highlight of junior hockey’s legacy, the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) unveiled its list of the 50 best players from the past five decades who have made their mark in the Western Hockey League (WHL), Ontario Hockey League (OHL), and the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL).

Top Players

Topping this prestigious list is the iconic Mario Lemieux, renowned as the greatest player in the history of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Lemieux, who honed his skills with the Laval Voisins in the QMJHL, garnered the No. 1 spot, surpassing Sidney Crosby, another Penguins legend, who ranked second after a commendable junior career with the Rimouski Oceanic. Wayne Gretzky, a celebrated figure in hockey history and an OHL veteran, claimed the third position.

Reflections on Legacy

Expressing his gratitude, Lemieux remarked, “It’s an honor to be recognized among such an esteemed group of players. My experiences with Laval and the QMJHL were fundamental in shaping my career in the NHL. The CHL’s impact on Canadian hockey and player development over the years cannot be overstated.”

CHL President Dan MacKenzie lauded Lemieux’s contributions, stating, “Mario Lemieux’s legacy with the Laval Voisins is a cornerstone of CHL history. His record-setting season in 1983-84 has remained unmatched for over four decades, and his subsequent NHL career has further solidified his reputation as one of the game’s all-time greats.”

Record-Breaking Achievements

Lemieux’s record-breaking 1983-84 season is pivotal; he achieved a staggering 282 points, including 133 goals and 149 assists, in just 70 games—a feat that remains unparalleled in the league’s history. Over three seasons with Laval, he netted 247 goals and accumulated 562 points across 200 games. His illustrious NHL career, although plagued by injuries, was remarkable, as he netted 690 goals and notched 1,723 points in merely 915 games.

Crosby, holding the second spot, demonstrated his prowess during his two seasons in Rimouski, scoring 120 goals and achieving 303 points in 121 games, while Gretzky was surpassed by Crosby and Connor McDavid, who ranked fourth, further showcasing the wealth of talent in junior hockey.
