Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving Expects Mitch Marner to Enter Free Agency

Uncertain Future for Mitch Marner

TORONTO — The future of Mitch Marner, a prominent player for the Toronto Maple Leafs and a pending unrestricted free agent, appears uncertain as General Manager Brad Treliving shared his outlook on Thursday morning. During a recent media session, Treliving indicated that he believes Marner will explore free agency, saying,

“Unless there’s a significant change here, I would anticipate that he’s going to hit the market.”

Shift in Tone

This statement marks a shift from a more optimistic tone Treliving displayed during his end-of-season press briefing, where he hinted at a possible return for Marner. On Thursday, however, he acknowledged the reality of potentially losing a key figure from the team.

“You’re trying to make your team better and the potential is there to lose a really good player. So there are lots of challenges, but we try to use it as an opportunity as well,”

he explained.

Playoff Exit and Contract Deadline

After the Maple Leafs were ousted by the Florida Panthers in the second round of the playoffs, the climate surrounding Marner’s future has seemed less encouraging, especially with his six-year contract nearing its end on June 30. Treliving remarked,

“Everybody’s focused on July 1st, and I get it. We don’t play on July 2nd, so you use the time starting on July 1st to try to make your team better.”

Challenges Ahead

NHL free agency kicks off on July 1, and while Treliving confirmed that the Leafs will explore various options during the offseason, including potential trades, he acknowledged the challenges of replacing a player of Marner’s caliber.

“There’s not a Mitch Marner tree that you go to and just replace him. So if that indeed happens, we will continue to look at ways that we can help ourselves,”

he remarked.

Marner’s Impressive Season

Mitch Marner has just wrapped up what has been his most prolific NHL season, registering 102 points, the fifth-most in the league, and accomplishing the significant milestone of surpassing the 100-point mark for the first time. As he enters free agency, he is positioned to be one of the most coveted players available.

Future Considerations

Marner, drafted fourth overall by the Leafs in 2015, has spent nine seasons with the team. Consequently, his decision regarding his future could take some time as he considers his options. Pierre LeBrun from TSN recently consulted with Marner’s agent, Darren Ferris, who shared,

“As per the rules, we are only permitted to speak with teams beginning July 1. At that time, prospective teams will have the opportunity to speak with Mitch directly. Following those conversations, Mitch will make an informed and thoughtful decision.”
