Manchester United’s Leadership Changes as Dave Brailsford Reduces Role

Changes at Manchester United

Changes continue at Manchester United as Dave Brailsford, a notable figure in the club’s recent restructuring, is set to diminish his day-to-day responsibilities. This development comes after a source, speaking on the condition of anonymity, disclosed the shift to The Associated Press.

Brailsford, well-known for his impactful contributions to British cycling, played a significant role in billionaire Jim Ratcliffe‘s attempts to revitalize the storied football club following Ratcliffe’s minority investment last year.

Disappointing Results

Despite these efforts, the results have been disappointing, with United finishing last season in 15th place in the Premier League— their worst performance in the league’s history— and facing record low points and defeat totals.

Although Brailsford will continue as a director at United and maintain his role as sporting director for Ratcliffe’s INEOS group, his involvement in United’s daily operations will become more limited, according to the insider assessment.

Recent Restructuring and Personnel Changes

This scale-back is the latest episode in a series of tumultuous changes the club has experienced since Ratcliffe acquired a 25% stake for £1.04 billion (approximately $1.3 billion) and took charge of football operations from the Glazer family.

His goal was to restore United to its former glory, but since his investment, the club has witnessed a revolving door of personnel changes, with prominent figures hired and let go frequently. For example:

  • Former manager Erik ten Hag was dismissed just three months after being granted a one-year contract extension.
  • Director of Football Dan Ashworth left under six months into his role, following a protracted effort to recruit him from Newcastle.

In contrast, Omar Berrada was brought in as CEO from Manchester City, and Jason Wilcox, also from City, joined as technical director. Both Berrada and Wilcox remain in key positions within the leadership structure that supports head coach Ruben Amorim.

Looking Ahead

As these changes unfold, Manchester United fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how the club navigates its path toward recovery in both management and performance on the pitch.
