Protests Against Ownership of Manchester United
A new wave of protests is set to unfold as a Manchester United supporters’ group targets both the Glazer family and Sir Jim Ratcliffe during their opening match of the Premier League season against Arsenal. The 1958, renowned for their advocacy against the ownership of the Glazers, will stage a march to Old Trafford on August 17, coinciding with the highly anticipated match.
Ratcliffe’s Stake and Controversy
With a 28.94% stake in Manchester United, Ratcliffe undertook control of daily operations from the Glazers in February 2024. Despite initially being considered a potential champion for the club, his popularity has waned amid contentious changes he has implemented.
A representative from The 1958 commented, “We’re facing the same ownership problems as before; two decades with the Glazers is too long to bear. We’re making it clear: enough is enough. We cannot let fleeting hopes and recent signings distract us from the critical issues behind the scenes.”
Fight for Club Identity
The spokesperson emphasized that the demonstration on August 17 transcends mere ownership disputes, framing it as a fight for the club’s identity and values. They lamented,
“This protest stands for every fan who has faced silencing, eviction, financial strain, or negligence. It’s about safeguarding the future of football itself.”
Addressing Ratcliffe
The tone turned sharp as the spokesperson addressed Ratcliffe directly, stating,
“You have linked your fate with the Glazers and are contributing to the decline of everything our club symbolizes. Your intentions are no longer in alignment with ours.”
Ratcliffe’s Response to Criticism
Ratcliffe has previously expressed that he might resign from his role if he endures the same degree of hostility that the Glazer family encounters. In comments made to The Times, he acknowledged the difficulties of being in the public eye when the club is underperforming, stating,
“I understand that nobody is happy with where Manchester United stands. I can endure criticism for a while, but if it reaches the point of the abuse directed at the Glazers, I would have to reconsider my position.”
Recent Performance
Last season, Manchester United finished a disappointing 15th in the Premier League, marking their lowest ranking since 1974, a result that led to their absence from European competitions following a loss in the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur.
