Manchester United Finalizes Transfer of Antony to Real Betis
In a significant development for both parties, Manchester United has reportedly finalized a €25 million ($29.3 million) transfer of winger Antony to Real Betis. This agreement, confirmed by sources to ESPN, marks the culmination of negotiations that had briefly stalled the previous Friday but gained momentum on transfer deadline day.
Transfer Details
Real Betis will pay a base amount of €22 million, supplemented by an additional €3 million contingent on performance-related bonuses. Crucially, United retains a 50% stake in any future transfer of the player, securing potential financial benefits should Antony move again.
Antony’s Career at Manchester United
Originally signed from Ajax in 2022, Antony had a five-year contract with United, which had two years remaining at the time of the transfer. Uniquely, this arrangement has allowed the club to avoid making extra payments to the Brazilian forward as part of the deal.
During his three-year tenure at Old Trafford, the 25-year-old made 96 appearances, notching up 12 goals. However, since January, Antony has not played for United, as he has been on loan at Betis since the latter part of last season. His performance in La Liga—which included nine goals in 26 matches—has persuaded the Spanish club to make his acquisition permanent. He is expected to complete a medical examination soon, followed by the conclusion of personal terms.
Recent Developments
Despite being one of United’s most expensive signings, second only to Paul Pogba’s £86 million transfer, Antony’s recent exclusion from Ruben Amorim’s squad for the preseason tour of the United States points to a turbulent period of transition for the player. He has also been training away from the main group at Carrington, alongside others labeled in the so-called ‘bomb squad,’ including Jadon Sancho and Tyrell Malacia, indicating a significant shift in his standing within the team.
