Manchester City Prepares for Club World Cup
Khaldoon Al Mubarak, the chairman of Manchester City, pledged that the club’s transfer activities are set to proceed quickly as they prepare for the upcoming Club World Cup in the United States, commencing on June 15. City will kick off their tournament against the Moroccan team Al Wydad, marking a critical juncture in the season as the competition offers the last chance for City to capture silverware.
Challenges and Changes Following a Tough Season
Having faced a challenging 2024-25 season with a record 16 losses across all competitions, City is keen on making significant adjustments following a mid-season downturn in form that saw them drop out of the Premier League title contention. Furthermore, after a tough FA Cup final defeat to Crystal Palace, the team ended the season in third place, emphasizing the need for reinforcements.
New Additions and Summer Plans
In an extensive conversation with the club’s official media, Al Mubarak discussed the upcoming summer transfer window, expressing confidence in the squad’s recent additions. Four players—Nico Gonzalez, Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov, and Vitor Reis—joined the team in January as part of efforts to reverse the club’s fortunes.
“We feel very good about these players,” he stated, outlining specific targets for the summer transfer period. “We have a clear idea of our top choices in various positions, and we aim to conduct our business decisively and efficiently. Our goal is to finalize the squad in time for the Club World Cup.”
Commitment to Improvement and Key Player Departures
Al Mubarak has been a pivotal figure at the helm since Sheikh Mansour’s acquisition in 2008, overseeing the club’s rise to prominence in English football, which includes eight Premier League titles and their first Champions League victory in 2023. However, the chairman acknowledged the dissatisfaction stemming from the recent season and the yearning for improvement among star players like Erling Haaland and the Ballon d’Or winner Rodri.
“The players, after the match against Fulham, expressed their eagerness to return and prepare for the new season. There’s a shared determination to come back hungry for success,” Al Mubarak highlighted.
He reported that even standout players like Guardiola’s star Haaland are focused on preparing rather than taking an extended vacation, illustrating their commitment.
Additionally, Al Mubarak referenced the ongoing transitions within the club’s management structure, discussing strategic meetings held shortly after their last match, as internal discussions continue with key figures including chief executives and directors.
Legacy of Kevin De Bruyne
Lastly, he recognized the significance of Kevin De Bruyne, who is set to leave the club when his contract expires on June 30. Reportedly, De Bruyne is in negotiations with Napoli regarding a potential move.
“Kevin has been nothing short of extraordinary, and in my opinion, he stands as the greatest player in this club’s history. His record of achievements, including multiple titles and individual honors, speaks volumes about his contributions as a leader and teammate,” Al Mubarak remarked.
The team will contend with Al Wydad, Al Ain from the United Arab Emirates, and Juventus in the Club World Cup group stage, eager to reclaim their standing and add to their legacy.
